About Steve Exten
I am just an ordinary guy who enjoys writing and artwork, mechanical things and riding motorbikes. And that in a nutshell is a precis of my life, well sort of.
I wasn’t great at school, and I left without Os or As or Ologies.
I have been drawing, and writing, off and on, for ever. I don’t draw so often these days. But I try to write every day. The drawing though comes in bursts and there can be years between them.
I started work as an apprentice gardener, and now 49 years later I write technical manuals for aero-engines. It is amazing how circumstances change as the years go by.
I love chunky engineering, steam ships, lifting bridges, canal barges, classic yachts, and piston-engined aircraft; and maps. Oh, I love maps. A map is a flat book, a historical montage. Maps can tell you so much, I read them, and draw them as well.
I love the pale red of a solitary poppy; wild meadow flowers and woodland bluebells; layered hedgerows and dry-stone walls; the music of Carlos Santana, Vaughan Williams, and the art of Kandinsky.
I am a mechanic now by trade and keen lover of motorbikes. In fact, everything I do radiates from motorbikes, and I ride a sidecar outfit (a Chair) too. Sidecar riding is a challenge, and you need to challenge yourself from time to time, and sidecars certainly do that. Bikes and Chairs are a great place for thinking. It is just you, arguing with yourself, as the miles roll by. I have solved many a storyline plot on my bike when I’m in the zone.
Steve Exten lives with his wife (and his motorbikes) in the West of England.
